Job Description

We require a Developer/Software Engineer for an initial 5 month contract role based on a Government Client site in Newport, South Wales to start asap...
Please be advised this role is deemed outside of IR35.

Role Overview:
As a statistical producer - charts, tables and maps are a key communication tool to aid user understanding of the Client's data. This role will help them to extend and enhance their ability to provide these in an accessible, mobile first way looking to utilise SVG and progressive enhancement to ensure all users can access the content. This piece of work will bring together their current Chart builder, replace their current table builder and extend their ability to create a visual content with the addition of a new map builder into a consistent approach.
Currently they produce custom maps each time required and as they are often very similar, automating the creation of four main templates can be much more efficient for their teams and help to ensure consistency across outputs.
The current table builder needs to be replaced as changes to publishing requirements have made the current iteration difficult to use. This leads to it being incredibly time consuming for the Client's publishing team to produce tables that meet the needs of statistical producers.
The outputs from these tools should be available both as stand-alone items and embeddable within their written publications.

Essential skills/experience required:

Previous experience building server-side web applications/microservices using Go and/or Java

Experience of working with D3.js and/or other JavaScript libraries to produce data visualisations

Understanding of and experience with a range of approaches to testing application code and systems for behaviour and performance

Experience developing efficient, optimised and clear code

Experience working on technical projects within a team using a git version control system

Understanding of the use of Responsive Web Design and building for accessibility

Daily duties include:

Development within an agile multidisciplinary team with regular deployments to production, no 'big bang' releases.
Code should be developed to meet the Digital Publishing development standards

Please be advised that this role is based in Newport and you will be required to run fortnightly show and tells with the Technical Lead, Head of Data along with any other development team members.

Code should be published in the open on GitHub account, to MIT licence
Also to adhere to the Client's design pattern styles.

Please note you will be required to travel the Client's other site in Hampshire at least once every 4 weeks.
